Taking Back Control

Corey's fight against BPH has provided a decade of relief

Corey Blassingame-blog

“I couldn't even take my kids to an amusement park...I was always worried about how far the bathroom might be."

For nearly 10 years, Corey, 56, lived with progressive urinary symptoms that slowly began to shape his daily life. What started as a nuisance gradually turned into something much more disruptive which impacted his sleep, limited his activities, and caused anxiety when access to a bathroom was uncertain.

As a father who loves spending time with his family, Corey began noticing how much his symptoms were affecting important moments. Outings that should have been simple started to feel stressful, especially when bathrooms weren’t easily accessible.

“I couldn’t even take my kids to an amusement park,” Corey recalled. “Those places are huge, and I was always worried about how far the bathroom might be.”

The uncertainty followed him everywhere. Travel, something he had always enjoyed, suddenly became a source of angst. Corey even found himself turning down trips to visit family and avoiding long drives or unfamiliar places.

“I had never felt anxiety like that before,” he said. “But when you’re worried about embarrassing your family in public, it changes how you approach everything.”

Nights Without Rest

The disruption didn’t stop during the day. At night, Corey limited his water intake hours before going to bed and adjusted his routine in hopes of getting a decent night’s sleep. Despite those efforts, the problem persisted.

His wife would often notice him getting out of bed multiple times during the night, sometimes making as many as four trips to the bathroom. On occasion, Corey would even sleepwalk to the restroom without remembering it the next morning.

“I thought I was doing everything right,” Corey said. “But my wife would tell me I was up again and again during the night. Sometimes I didn’t even remember getting up.”

Over time, the lack of restful sleep and constant interruptions began to take their toll, and Corey knew he needed to find a solution.

"It felt like I finally got my life back.”

Finding a Solution

Corey wasn’t shy about sharing his experiences with friends, family, and doctors. Through this open dialogue, Corey learned that his symptoms were caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as an enlarged prostate. As he researched treatment options, he hoped to find a solution that could relieve his symptoms without requiring major surgery or significantly disrupting his life.

Corey ultimately discovered the UroLift™ System, a minimally invasive treatment designed to relieve urinary symptoms caused by BPH. The UroLift™ System works by lifting and holding enlarged prostate tissue out of the way, so it no longer blocks the urethra. At the time, the procedure was quite new, but when Corey learned it was minimally invasive and provided lasting relief1, he knew it was the right approach for him.

Following the procedure, Corey began to notice meaningful improvements in his daily life. The nighttime interruptions that had once left him exhausted became far less frequent, and the constant anxiety about restroom access gradually faded.

“It felt like I finally got my life back,” Corey said.

Ten Years Later

With his symptoms under control, Corey was able to return to activities he had previously avoided and spend more time focusing on his family instead of planning around bathroom breaks. The change marked the start of a new chapter.

After having the UroLift procedure, Corey and his wife welcomed their fourth child, an experience he counts as one of the most meaningful moments in his life.

Today, nearly 10 years after his procedure, Corey continues to enjoy the benefits of that decision. He takes his youngest son to amusement parks, travels internationally with his wife and enjoys quality sleep as the norm.

Nearly a decade later, Corey’s decision continues to pay off—allowing him to focus on what matters most: spending time with his family and living life without the constant worry that once held him back. Corey is now a UroLift Patient Ambassador*, part of a network of real UroLift™ System patients who are available to share their BPH and UroLift journey.
