From Leaking to Living
How Larry Beat His BPH Symptoms

Larry has spent most of his life helping others. For decades, he worked as a surgical assistant, supporting physicians in the operating room and caring for patients during some of their most critical moments. Even today, in retirement, Larry spends his time tutoring at his church and volunteering in his community.
But several years ago, something began to change.
Urinary symptoms that started as a minor inconvenience gradually developed into obstacles that began interfering with his daily routine. Larry first noticed the problem about five years before seeking treatment. At the time, he was still working in the operating room, where procedures could last for hours. Leaving in the middle of a case wasn’t always possible, so he started adjusting his habits to cope.
“I actually stopped drinking as much fluid because I didn’t want to leave during a procedure,” Larry recalls. “But that led to dehydration, which isn’t healthy either.”
As his symptoms progressed, Larry found himself waking up three or four times a night to use the bathroom. The interrupted sleep left him exhausted during the day, and even simple activities started to feel stressful.
The fear of accidents began influencing everyday choices.
The Breaking Point
Over time, the situation became even more difficult. Larry began experiencing urinary leakage, something that made him increasingly anxious in public situations.
“That was the worst part,” Larry said. “When your bladder starts contracting and you can’t control it, that’s when you know something has to change.”
The fear of accidents began influencing everyday choices. Larry often wore dark pants when going out. Travel became complicated. During a trip to Europe with his wife and friends, long days of walking and train rides made bathroom access unpredictable. His wife started encouraging him to look into treatment options.
By that point, Larry knew he couldn’t ignore the problem any longer.
“[Meds] probably cut the problem in half...But that still left a lot to deal with.”

Searching for the Right Treatment
Because of his background working in hospitals, Larry was already familiar with some of the procedures used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or an enlarged prostate. One common surgical option, transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), didn’t feel like the right fit.
“I’d seen enough procedures to know there can be complications,” Larry explained. “I wanted to see if there was a less invasive option.”
He first tried medication, and while it helped reduce some symptoms, it didn’t solve the underlying issue.
“[Meds] probably cut the problem in half,” he said. “But that still left a lot to deal with.”
Through conversations with urologists, Larry learned about the UroLift™ System, a minimally invasive treatment designed to relieve urinary symptoms caused by BPH. The procedure works by lifting and holding enlarged prostate tissue out of the way so it no longer blocks the urethra.

Larry underwent his first UroLift procedure about four years ago. “It made a huge difference,” Larry said. “Probably about an 80 percent improvement.”

Later, doctors discovered that one lobe of Larry’s prostate was unusually large and still causing some obstruction. To address the remaining symptoms, he underwent a second UroLift procedure, during which three additional implants were placed. This time, the recovery process was even smoother.
“The second one was very straightforward,” he said. “It really finished the job.”
At a recent follow-up appointment, Larry underwent a bladder ultrasound. After urinating the scan showed only about 70cc of urine remaining in his bladder—far below the level that typically signals urgency. For Larry, the result confirmed what he was already experiencing in daily life.
Things were working.

Living Life Without the Constant Worry
Today, Larry says the difference has been life-changing. He no longer plans his day around restrooms, and travel feels enjoyable again instead of stressful. Recently, he and his wife took another trip, and for the first time in years he didn’t have to worry about constantly searching for the nearest bathroom.
“You don’t realize how much it affects your life until it’s better,” Larry said.
Now retired, at 72 Larry spends his days doing the things he loves, staying involved in his four adult children’s lives while continuing his volunteer work. Today, Larry is grateful he took action when he did. The constant interruptions, anxiety about leakage, and sleepless nights aren’t even a passing thought.
“I don’t have to think about it anymore,” he said. “And that’s the best part.”
